Her mind's eye
"Today, finally, I got a great picture of Emily in my mind."Uma has a "pretend friend" Emily. For quite some time, Uma has complained that when she tries to imagine what Emily looks like, she always imagined some other friend or acquaintance. Today was a triumph.

The loss of innocence
A specific aspect of school that bothers me is the influence of peers. I fear that their regard will start occupying more and more of Uma's world view. Children can be cruel and judgmental (except mine). I worry that she will do things less naturally, with more self-consciousness. The TV trance pictures notwithstanding, Uma's outside influences are few. That's both good and bad, but, like any parent, I only see the bad.Labels: words
